Holiday Inn Express will be opening a new Spartanburg location in 2009, its parent company said Thursday. Atlanta-based InterContinental Hotels Group will open the 96-room hotel at the intersection of I-85 and Chesnee Highway. The company said it is adding the location because of the increase of industry inside Spartanburg County. “We’re attracted to the area because of the growing base of high-tech and international industries in Spartanburg,” spokeswoman Caroline Sanfilippo said in an e-mail. “We expect that this hotel’s location near I-85 with excellent visibility from the highway will drive business, and we expect some of the local corporate offices and universities to be demand drivers.” The newest location is about five miles from the University of South Carolina Upstate and nine miles from downtown Spartanburg. The Holiday Inn Express chain was launched in 1991 and now has nearly 1,600 hotels in the Americas, and almost 200 more in Europe, Asia and Africa. In the area, Holiday Inn Express has I-85 locations in Duncan, Gaffney and Greenville, and another off I-26 near WestGate Mall inside Spartanburg’s city limits. InterContinental Hotels Group also owns and operates InterContinental Hotels, Crowne Plaza Hotel, Hotel Indigo, Holiday Inn, Staybridge Suites and Candlewood Suites.
